A Brief Argument in Favor of Exclusive Psalmody

Read this brief quotation hosted by Oldtruth.com (link).

Note especially the headline, that hymns are an effective way of transmitting Christian doctrine.

Then consider that they are also - for the same reasons - an effective way of perpetuating heresy.

Finally, admit that singing all and only the Psalter is a way of transmitting Christian doctrine taught therein, while minimizing the perpetuation of unscriptural heresy.

  1. I see your argument...

...though the same careful discernment that would lead a person to only sing the Psalms... would also lead a person to reject any "modern" songs that delivered (or implied) bad doctrine in their lyrics.

Conversely, the lack of discernment that might lead a music director to lead the congregation in "I Found Jesus" (even if he disagreed with the Ordo Salutis it proclaimed) because it sounds so cool and gets the people jumping... would be likely to lead that same director to not sing the psalms because they don't sound so cool.

  2. An anonymous poster has provided a few arguments against Psalmody (let alone exclusive psalmody) but they don't seem to be particularly related to the brief argument above. I'll plan to respond to those arguments at some point in the future, but not in this particular comment box.

5. Please don't just spam. It's one thing to be concise, it's another thing to simply use the comment box to advertise.
