Brandon at Siris has posted a summary of Turretin on the Perspicuity of Scripture (link) as well as directing us to Turretin's own words (link). This is very important reading for people who imagine that the Reformed position is that all of Scripture is easily understood: that is far from correct.

When I read this it comes to my mind several verses of Scripture I have pondered for many years:
ReplyDeleteLuk 24:32 They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?"
and
Act 26:16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you,
and
Rev 1:19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.
At each intersection with Christ, you see what has, what is and what is to come.
And so it is now today. We are on a one way path moving deliberately closer and closer to saying loudly:
Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
Wow, there's a lot of qualifications, except-fors, ifs, buts and maybes.

ReplyDelete(a) Turretin makes rather abundant use of Scripture in his own writings on the subject; and
(b) I am glad to see that you are interested in examining the Scripture to see if what Turretin says is so. That is definitely the right approach to take.
If there is some particular point that he raises that seems contrary to Scripture (or simply extra-Scriptural) please let me know.
