Yesterday, Mr. William Albrecht (Roman Catholic) and I (Reformed) debated the topic of the Canon of Scripture, specifically the question of whether the so-called Deuterocanonical books and parts of books are Scripture (link to mp3). The most interesting part of the debate, as I believe Mr. Albrecht would agree, were the four cross-examination segments immediately following the constructive speeches.
I hope to upload this to YouTube, but this is faster in the short term.
There are a number of points where I think it might be helpful to add some additional discussion, and I'll try to do that in the coming weeks, rather than wedging it all into this post.

I just listened to the debate. I have to say I can hear a "change" in the "sound" that comes out of W.A..
ReplyDeleteHe either has been touched by the Gentleman's Spirit, Christ, or he has gone through some training so as to remove from the sound of his voice the harshness I am more acquainted with in other audios of him.
He needs to be commended for this change. I would, of course, hope and pray the change is a turning change to verses like these and the consequent production of such fruit manifestations of one turning and doing what these verses conclude:
Mat 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Having said that, I do not "hear" the depth of spiritual knowledge in his voice as I do in yours, TF!
It is clear there is a gulf or divide that separates the various theologies of this debate.
Finally, I see there is still a reluctance on the part of W.A. to fully embrace, and so by embracing, to allow the Spiritual change to change his views with regard to the verse, Luke 24:27.
No one can understand what you are the proponent of unless they have a similar experience as these earliest of brethren had, this Spiritual experience written about here:
Luk 24:45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
Luk 24:46 and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
Luk 24:47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Luk 24:48 You are witnesses of these things.
Luk 24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
One should easily sense the spirit of this debate with regard to the proponent to be this:
1Pe 3:14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,
1Pe 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
1Pe 3:16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

ReplyDeleteif you're interested, I can email you a re-encoding of the debate .mp3 in a smaller file size. I tried re-encoding the audio at 32kbps (the same bitrate that the Dividing Line uses), and the file size went down to 28 MB.
I'm anxious to hear this; I really got a lot out of your last debate with W.A.

Nice job, as always. I thought your point about errors in the apocrypha was decisive. GNR’s response that the original Hebrew version has been lost and there have probably been errors in transmitting the Greek text was terrible – one wonders if the ad hoc nature such as response does as much damage to his case than if it were actually true. Your point about Athanasius was also very strong.

ReplyDeleteMcAfee tells me (the two times I tried to download it) that the website is known for including malicious bugs in their downloads. I just had one bad computer problem, I don't want to risk a second.

What are your thoughts during the Canon debate well what did you think of Williams arguments?
