Q. 50. What is required in the second commandment?
A. The second commandment requireth the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath appointed in his Word.[127]
Q. 51. What is forbidden in the second commandment?
A. The second commandment forbiddeth the worshiping of God by images,[128] or any other way not appointed in his Word.[129]
Q. 52. What are the reasons annexed to the second commandment?
A. The reasons annexed to the second commandment are, God’s sovereignty over us,[130] his propriety in us,[131] and the zeal he hath to his own worship.[132]

A. Q. 108. What are the duties required in the second commandment?
A. The duties required in the second commandment are, the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath instituted in his Word;[518] particularly prayer and thanksgiving in the name of Christ;[519] the reading, preaching, and hearing of the Word;[520] the administration and receiving of the sacraments;[521] church government and discipline;[522] the ministry and maintainance thereof;[523] religious fasting;[524] swearing by the name of God;[525] and vowing unto him;[526] as also the disapproving, detesting, opposing all false worship;[527] and, according to each one’s place and calling, removing it, and all monuments of idolatry.[528]
Q. 109. What are the sins forbidden in the second commandment?
A. The sins forbidden in the second commandment are, all devising,[529] counselling,[530] commanding,[531] using,[532] and anywise approving, any religious worship not instituted by God himself;[533] tolerating a false religion; the making any representation of God, of all or of any of the three persons, either inwardly in our mind, or outwardly in any kind of image or likeness of any creature whatsoever;[534] all worshipping of it,[535] or God in it or by it;[536] the making of any representation of feigned deities,[537] and all worship of them, or service belonging to them,[538] all superstitious devices,[539] corrupting the worship of God,[540] adding to it, or taking from it,[541] whether invented and taken up of ourselves,[542] or received by tradition from others,[543] though under the title of antiquity,[544] custom,[545] devotion,[546] good intent, or any other pretence whatsoever;[547] simony;[548] sacrilege;[549] all neglect,[550] contempt,[551] hindering,[552] and opposing the worship and ordinances which God hath appointed.[553].

A. The reasons annexed to the second commandment, the more to enforce it, contained in these words, For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments;[554] are, besides God’s sovereignty over us, and propriety in us,[555] his fervent zeal for his own worship,[556] and his revengeful indignation against all false worship, as being a spiritual whoredom;[557] accounting the breakers of this commandment such as hate him, and threatening to punish them unto divers generations;[558] and esteeming the observers of it such as love him and keep his commandments, and promising mercy to them unto many generations.[559].

ReplyDeleteThe argument that my Westminster friends make is that they are uncomfortable with the concept of, say, an actor portraying Jesus. But most of them (speaking of the OPC) would not deny licensure to a candidate who thought a portrayal of Jesus in a movie or a children's illustration was not in violation of the second commandment. In OPC history some have, though, denied licensure based on that idea, so there is not a consensus among the leadership of the various presbyteries on this very specific issue. Nor do these gentlemen hold those colleagues who are in opposition to them as "heretics" for their views on the second commandment.
Are we in violation of the second commandment if we have a cross or a fish symbol in our church?
Were the disciples of Jesus in violation of the second commandment every time they thought about Jesus, bringing an image to their minds?

ReplyDeleteI think you make some valid points and I don't know of any churches who hold to the position that images are prohibited that are consistent. Calvin was opposed to the display of crosses. God commanded certain representations of Himself to be made in the OT. And then there always seems to be an almost gnostic tendency among those who are most opposed to the making of images. God ordinarily works through matter and Jesus certainly looked like something. He wasn't just some words floating about. I think the key to the problems can be found in Deuteronomy 4:15 where God specifically says that the images were not to be made because God did not take on a form and He did not want them to make a picture that said something false about Him. In many ways I prefer Eastern Orthodox iconography that does not attempt to provide a visual representation of what the person actually looked like but has images which declare a theological truth about the person. The popular picture of Jesus with blue eyes staring off into the distance is useless, communicates nothing, and should be thrown away. The crucifix, that many Protestants find so offensive (even those who are not offended by Jesus in the manger) is perhaps the most worthwhile visual representation of Jesus.

I can think of numerous passages which cause my mind to reflect a variety of images of Our Triune God including the description of Jesus' person, His hands and feet, the form in length of His hair and the color of His eyes. I must be missing something here?

ReplyDeleteA human being acting in the role of Christ is not something that the standards directly deal with, that I recall. I would share their discomfort.

I'm sure you're right. And I don't know if we necessarily need to make it a requirement that someone be fully persuaded on that particular point, as long as they teach what the church teaches.
Sadly, these days, there are presbyteries that might not even discipline someone who openly taught or practiced contrary to the standards on this point, though I hope they would at least draw the line there.

There's a difference of opinion as to how central this particular issue is. I think there's still a consensus on the issue itself - but I may be wrong.

Of course they don't.

Puritans would certainly oppose those - that issue is less clear than the "pictures of Jesus" issue.

I don't think anyone claims that. That would not be an image they made, but one He gave them.

ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not aware of passages that tell us what his hands and feet look like (except that they bear the imprint of the nails). I'm not aware of any that we should take literally about the length or color of his hair or the color of his eyes, but perhaps I missed something.

ReplyDeleteEmotions are what come to mind immediately. He rejoiced. He wept. He was hungry, thin and pale looking after 40 days and nights in that desert. I have been to that hot desert and just one day there was enough to wear me out!
There is the story of His birth, as a baby wrapped warmly lying in a manger. Then there is the time when He was in the Temple when He was Twelve years old. Then there is the description of Him being a carpenter's son.
With each of these accounts I immediately begin thinking of a baby, a boy, a young man and then to mention also there is the ghastly sight of Him hanging on the tree stripped of outer clothes marred beyond recognition as they looked upon Him, bludgeoned, bleeding and bruised.
And then these, thinking Him being a Nazarene, I imagine His hair is long, with a long beard untouched by a razor, verses like this one:
"Rev 1:14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire,...". See also Revelation 2:18 and 19:12
Again, it is the bold highlighted portion within the answer to question #109 that stops me. How do I avoid "inwardly in our mind" thinking about those images and not violating what is being addressed there?
I suppose I am not understanding what the answer implies??
