1. Thanks for posting a comment. Without you, this blog would not be interactive.
2. Please be polite. That doesn't mean you have to use kid gloves, but please try not to flame others, even if they are heretics, infidels, or worse.
3. If you insult me, I'm more likely to delete your comment than if you butter me up. After all, I'm human. I prefer praise to insults. If you prefer insults, there's something wrong with you.
4. Please be concise. The comment box is not your blog. Your blog is your blog. If you have a really long comment, post it on your blog and post a short summary of it here.
5. Please don't just spam. It's one thing to be concise, it's another thing to simply use the comment box to advertise.
6. Please note, by commenting here, you are relinquishing your (C) in your comments to me.
7. Remember that you will give an account on judgment day for your words, including those typed in comment boxes. Try to write so you will not be ashamed if it is read back before the entire world.
8. Stay on topic. If your comment has nothing to do with the post, email it to me (my email can be obtained through my blogger profile), or simply don't post it.
9. Don't post as "Anonymous." If you are going to post anonymously, at least use some kind of recognizable "handle," so we can tell you apart from all the other anonymous folks. (This is moot at the moment, since recent abuse has forced me to turn off "anonymous" commenting.)
10. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you; and abstain from doing to others what you would not wish upon yourself.
TF I enjoyed the broadcast! I was a bit embarrassed in that the interviewer reminded me of me! I am constantly adding words to another when they pause to complete a thought which he did when you would pause before completing your comment. He is aggressive and I guess because it's live radio or canned they don't want to much silence?
ReplyDeleteBut to the topic when asked for your Bible verses on this subject I, of course thought of mine as you shared yours when the two of you were wrapping up.
My mind always goes to Romans and chapter 5 verses 16 & 18. As you know the Greek word translated "justification" in verse 16 is different than the Greek word in verse 18 translated justification. In 16 the meaning is an equitable deed and in verse 18 it is an acquittal!
Your explanation to illustrate being imputed His Righteousness I thought was brilliant and cogent and one does well to ponder it! For anyone of us to retain His Righteousness in this life acquitted and the next requires eternal redemption and continual imputation!
Bless you and indeed I hope Apologia has you aon a few more times if not many more!
TurretinFan,
ReplyDeleteI thought you stuttered and himmed and hawed too much trying to prove JBFA.
Too much on what JBFA is not and not enough on what it is. And your bit on James/vindication was sloppy.
Other than that, it was great.
( Almost as weak and "odious" as your assertion on Green Baggins that the shew bread shadow is fulfilled on the cross and not the Supper).
DOES GOD ARBITRARILY BESTOW FAITH? BY STEVE FINNELL
ReplyDeleteMany believe that Ephesians 2:8 teaches that God arbitrarily bestows faith on a selected few so they can believe and be saved. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.(NKJV)
Salvation is the gift of God, not faith. The gift God gives is forgiveness from sin.
How do men receive faith?
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of God.(NKJV)
Faith comes from hearing the gospel preached. Faith is not arbitrarily dispatched to a chosen few.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greeks,
Salvation is attained by believing the gospel. Salvation is not predetermined by God and forced on a select few by forcing them to have faith and be saved.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God , it pleased God through the foolishness of the messaged preached to save those who believe.(NKJV)
God saves men through preaching the gospel. God does not preselect men and the force them to have faith so they will be saved.
John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but that the wrath of God abides on him."(NKJV)
If God imputes faith to all who believe, why would those who do not believe receive the wrath of God. Non-believers would have no responsibility nor capability to believed and be saved.
1 John 3:20-23....And this is His commandment: that we we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.(NKJV)
Why would God command us to believe on His Son Jesus Christ if we are not capable of believing? Does He arbitrarily bestows that faith on non-believers?
Jesus said "He who believes and is baptized will be saved.."(Mark 16:16) Jesus did not say God will give you the gift of faith so you can believe, be baptized and be saved.

Hello Steve,
ReplyDeleteAssuming you take "faith" to mean "believing the Gospel," I'd like to ask a couple quick questions.
If faith comes from hearing the Gospel preached, what is the difference between 1) someone who hears and has faith, and 2) someone who hears but does not have faith? If you recall, something similar to this was what happened when Paul preached at the Areopagus. (Acts 17:32-34)
Also, in Ephesians 2:8, where is faith excluded as a gift of God?
Thanks,
Matthias
" Many believe that Ephesians 2:8 teaches that God arbitrarily bestows faith on a selected few so they can believe and be saved. Nothing could be farther from the truth."
ReplyDeleteThat is nothing but a misrepresentation. What is held there is that grace, faith and salvation in Eph 2:8-9 is the " gift " . Does God give this to each and every human being according to you ? Last time I read the Bible universalism is not taught. The Bible teaches some will be saved and that some shall remain lost.
Much of your comments consist of misrepresentation and strawmen arguments. If you are going to disagree with another theological position it is best if you honestly deal with what it teaches.
