How is "house" (οἶκος) used in the New Testament?
It can be used of a physical structure, namely an actual building whether a person's dwelling or the temple. It can also be used of a huge family group:
"House of Israel" Matthew 10:6
"House of David" Luke 1:27
"House of Jacob" Luke 1:33
But when it says "his own house," it doesn't have that broad sense. Instead it means to the place that the person lives, and the people there.
Matthew 13:57
And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
Mark 6:4
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
Luke 1:23
And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Luke 1:56
And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Luke 5:25
And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
Luke 5:29
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
Luke 8:39
Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
John 7:53
And every man went unto his own house.
1 Timothy 3:4-5
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
