The real Francis Turretin on: The Tri-Partite Division of the Law

At Virginia is for Hugenots, Andrew Meyers has an excellent post on the tri-partite division of the law with explanatory quotations from a variety of authors from Thomas Aquinas (popular with one of my pseudonymous readers) to Francis Turretin. (link)

  1. Having read the article to the end and to the words of Francis Turrentin I won't comment. It is to John Calvin's word at the beginning though that I include this assertion that all of these men, to summon up such profound "sound" doctrinal wisdom, must have been influenced by these words of Paul to lay out so clearly what their citation do, at least to my mind. Whether or not "moral" law is changed or different than the Eternal Moral Character of God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, One Essence, becomes the issue then:

    Eph 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
    Eph 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
    Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
    Eph 2:17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
    Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

    Even when the revelation of the Truth of the matter is known, apparently for some of that age and period and even now in this age and period, Jews that were and are nigh hold to some degree of identity with ceremonial laws.

    I cite Acts 15 and the joint communication that we read in Scripture that was carried far and near to Gentiles and the respect they are to hold differently than those Jewish Christians:::>

    Act 15:23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.
    Act 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
    Act 15:25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
    Act 15:26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    Act 15:27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
    Act 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
    Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well, Fare ye well.
    Act 15:30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:
    Act 15:31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

    The "One" New Man is of all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, equally, solely, one inheritance, not two different ones!

    The free Gift is Eternal Life:

    Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
    Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
    Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
    Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
    Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
    Rom 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
