The Works of John Witherspoon

John Witherspoon is one signers of the Declaration of Independence, and was a minister and president of Princeton Seminary. I'm not a big fan of his writings, but they are useful in marking the initial steps of distinctively American Presbyterian, as well as reflecting the thoughts of one of the U.S.A.'s "founding fathers."

Archive.org has kindly provided his works for easy download.
Volume 1
Volume 2

Also, for those unsatisfied by the above, please feel free to explore the other copies of the works available at Archive.org (link to unorganized list).

I also found the following set (apparently incomplete?) on Google:

A Woman's Response to Rachel Held Evans' "A Year of Biblical Womanhood" - Index

Obviously, my dear readers know perfectly well that I'm not a woman. Nevertheless, a woman who will remain anonymous (at least, that's the plan) to my dear readers kindly volunteered to write a response to Rachel Held Evans' "A Year in Biblical Womanhood." I edited this response and posted it to this blog in installments. The following serves as an index to those responses.

Bonaventure in English - Index

I cannot fully recommend the works of Bonavanture, sometimes referred to as "the Seraphic Doctor." Some people have speculated that Bonaventure serves as one of the links between Augustine and Calvin in terms of Calvin's doctrines of grace. I have not found very many English translations of Bonaventure's works, and only one English biography of Bonaventure, at least among those works that are freely available. I would be delighted to expand the index below, or to revise it if some of the works are pseudo-Bonaventure (he was popular enough that there are a substantial number of pseudographic works bearing his name).

Therefore, please don't think that the following is an exhaustive list of his works, or even a list of his works that has been thoroughly checked to confirm authenticity of authorship. Likewise, I cannot fully endorse the theology or liturgical practices of the 13th century Italian we know as Bonaventure.

Works

1) Christ: the One Master of All (English and Latin)

2) The Journey of the Mind into God (English and Latin) (English only txt alternative)(English only html alternative)

3) The Soliloquies of St. Bonaventure
  • Four Mental Exercises
    • How the soul by mental exercise ought to reflect the beams of contemplation to those things that are within her, that she may see (How formed by nature, deformed by sin, and reformed by grace)
    • How the soul by mental exercise ought to convert her contemplation to things external, that she may know (How unstable earthly wealth is, mutable worldly excellency is, and miserable worldly magnificence is)
    • How the soul by mental exercise ought to convert the beams of contemplation to things below her, that she may understand (The inevitable necessity of man's death, the formidable authority of final judgment, and the intolerable pain of eternal punishment)
    • How the soul by mental exercise ought to convert the light of contemplation to those things that are above her, that she may know and understand (The inestimable value of celestial joy, the unspeakable delight, and the interminable eternity)
  • Treatise, "A Bundle of Myrrh," concerning The Passion of Our Savior
    • Of our Lord's praying in the garden, and of his taking
    • Of the mocking of him before Annas, and Caiaphas, and Peter denying him

    • Of the things which were done after his death hanging yet on the Cross
    • Of the seven seals opened by the passion of Christ
    • Of the resurrection, ascension, and sending of the Holy Ghost

  • Of his humility and obedience, and of the divine condescensions shewn unto him at will
  • Of his love for poverty, and of the wondrous supplying of his needs

  • Of his ardent love, and yearning for martyrdom

William Albrecht (GNRHead) Index

Since I have done a dozen moderated live debates with Mr. William Albrecht (aka GNRHead), I figured it is time to create an index page for my interactions with him. Texts and Studies: Contributions to Biblical and Patristic Literature (Index)

The following is an index of the on-line versions of Texts and Studies: Contributions to Biblical and Patristic Literature originally edited by Joseph Armitage Robinson. "Debate" with Norman Geisler Regarding Ergun Caner - Index

Given the wide latitude that Dr. Norman Geisler has given Dr. Ergun Caner in using the word "debate," I don't think that Dr. Geisler can reasonably complain if I now claim to have "debated" Norman Geisler on the topic of Ergun Caner. It's not a real debate, and I'm not claiming it is, but there was some interaction. Here's an index of the interaction.

1) (Geisler) Norman Geisler's Alleged Comments
2) (TurretinFan) Response to Norman Geisler's Coments
3) (TurretinFan) When can We Expect our Apology?
4) (Geisler) Further Comments from Geisler
5) (TurretinFan) Dr. Norman Geisler Digs Himself a Deeper Hole
6) (Geisler) In Defense of Ergun Caner
7) (TurretinFan) Intro to Response to Geisler
8) (TurretinFan) Response to Geisler Regarding Caner Part 1
9) (TurretinFan) Response to Geisler Regarding Caner Part 2
10) (TurretinFan) Response to Geisler Regarding Caner Part 3
11) (TurretinFan) What Dr. Geisler Overlooked
12) (Geisler) In Further Defense of Ergun Caner
13) (TurretinFan) Rebutting Norman Geisler
14) (TurretinFan) Is Lying a Moral Issue?
15) (TurretinFan) Has Norman Geisler Acknowledged that Lying is a Moral/Ethical Issue?

Although, of course, there was a lot of work that went into this interaction with Norman Geisler (from both sides, I imagine), I think it would be unwise and misleading to go around saying that I "have debated Norman Geisler" (or for Dr. Geisler to say the same about me). That's why I have "debate" in quotation marks in the title of this post.

One Year Until the End of the World

The subject of this post is the message I found in my inbox earlier today. The message reminded me that Harold Camping has, based on complex series of calculations, predicted judgment day to be May 21, 2011. I have already attempted to show a number of problems in Mr. Camping's theology, and rather than rehash those problems, I'll just provide links to the relevant posts below:

1) "Lucifer" and Angels' Names

2) More not Less Church as the Day of the Lord Approaches

3) ISI Discussion Regarding Harold Camping

4) Four Hundred Thirty Years Series
a) Camping Jenga
b) How Then Four Hundred, Thirty Years?
c) From Seventy to More then a Million?
d) 430 Years from the Promise - A Response to Fred Butler

5) Camping and the Atonement

6) Surprising Wisdom from Harold Camping

I have no idea how many of Harold Camping's listeners on the Family Radio network read this blog, or whether they will hear and listen to me before May 22, 2010.

Bryan Cross - Index Page

Now that I've responded (and hosted responses from Pastor David King) to Bryan Cross of the Roman Catholic blog Called to Communion several times, it seems fitting to create an index page for easy reference to interactions with him. As with all index pages, I will try to update the page and I may date bump the page according to my plan (not yet implemented) to group all of the index pages at a particular time period for easy reference.

1. Response to Bryan Cross' Misuse of Jerome (David King)

2. Debunking "Natural Necessity" Argument (and other arguments) against Sola Scriptura (TurretinFan)

3. Demonstrating the Inevitable Flow of Communication (and consequent interpretive role) to the Individual (TurretinFan)

Corpus Reformatorum - Index Page

Google seems to have pulled the Corpus Reformatorum from their library. I have no idea why, and I'd rather not speculate. Hopefully, some day they will be back up again. Thankfully, Archive.org has images of many of the volumes, although the emphasis seems to be on Melancthon's works. I suspect that many of the volumes of Calvin's and Zwingli's works are possibly available under another title (such as under the sub-series title).

Aquinas Opera Omnia - Fretté & Maré - Index Page

The collection of all of Thomas Aquinas' works was undertaken by editors Paul Maré and Stanislai Eduardi Fretté in what is (to my knowledge) the largest collection of Aquinas' writings. Google Books has digitized many volumes of this collection (in two collections - first collection and second collection, and I've provided links to the relevant volumes below. There are other collections of Aquinas' writings as well, such as the one provided at Corpus Thomisticum (link). I'd love to expand this at some time to identify the contents of each volume (the first few volumes are the Summa Theologica, which is what most folks are interested in).

Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL) - Index Page

The following is a list of the volumes of the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL) that I was able to locate at Google Books and/or Archive.org. I wish to express my appreciation for the work I found at "Pr. Stefan"'s blog (link). There were a few issues with his list, and I have attempted to improve upon it, to the extent that I am able.

As you will note there is no obvious pattern to the order of the books. If you are looking for a particular father's work, therefore, you may have to a word search on his Latin name to find whether his works are included. I have not attempted to track down every Google copy for each volume (although there is a bibliogroup that may be helpful). If you find that any of the links are not to versions that are still "full view," please let me know.
