Steve Hays Responds to Francis Beckwith

I enjoyed this article (link) from Steve Hays on Francis Beckwith and his (Francis') peeve about the label "Roman Catholic."

I am going to ask a completely honest question with absolutely no ulterior motive or intent at disrespect. Would you be open to a debate between yourself and James White on the subject of infant baptism? I am only curious in the sense that your criticisms of Rome and others would seem more credible if at first you would put your own “house” as it were in order before continuing in your efforts. What I mean by that is being a Presbyterian and Mr. White being a “reformed” Baptist you have quite a theological difference over the issue of infant baptism. Now, on the surface you might be saying “we agree on the essentials of the faith” so no issue here. But please consider a few important points. According to the constitution of the Phoenix Reformed Baptist Church of which Mr. White is an elder, you would not be allowed, without special permission, to receive the Lords Supper. You would also not be allowed to be a “member” of that particular congregation unless you were baptized by full immersion.

SECTION 2.
Those eligible to commune at the Lord's Table are believers who have been baptized by immersion and who evidence a consistent life. While no un-baptized person can be a regular communicant, the Elders can admit to the Lord's Table an un-baptized visitor who is a consistent member of a properly constituted gospel church. No one may be invited to the Table without the knowledge of the Elders.
SECTION 3.
As a church we practice baptism of believers by immersion and, in accordance with the direction of Scripture, require submission to this ordinance as a prerequisite for church membership. Any person professing repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, and whose life makes that profession credible, desiring to be baptized shall make application to the Pastor. The Eldership will then meet with the applicant who shall be examined concerning his or her Christian experience and understanding of the significance of the ordinance of baptism.

Also, if Mr. White invited you to his church, would you be allowed to teach Sunday school to the kids?
Doesn’t this bother you on some deeper level when you consider this?

Anyway, in summary, how about it? You and Mr. White with your bibles in hand, debating the issue of infant baptism in the near future? Might be entertaining.
