Isaiah 22:20-25The name Eliakim means "God raised" or "God set up" and Hilkiah means "the LORD is my portion." It is the name of a real man, but it is a name that pointed forward to Jesus who God raised (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15; Jeremiah 30:9; and Acts 2:24), and whose portion was the LORD (cf. Psalm 16:5; Psalm 119:57; and Psalm142:5).
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: and I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house. And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons. In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the Lord hath spoken it.
The robed and girdled man is Jesus, the Son of Man:
Revelation 1:13
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Moreover the government and fatherhood referenced are also referring to him:
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Likewise, the key of the house of David belongs to him - he is the one who shuts and no one opens, and who opens and no one shuts:
Revelation 3:7
And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
It is he who sits on the throne of his father, David:
Isaiah 9:7
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Luke 1:32
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Moreover, he also receives the glory that comes with that throne:
Zechariah 6:13
Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
Matthew 19:28
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Matthew 25:31
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
What is perhaps more interesting is the concluding comment: "In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the Lord hath spoken it."
This seems to refer to the death of Christ, who was nailed to the cross, and the burden that was laid on him was cut off in his death.
Isaiah 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:8
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
Colossians 2:14
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
If I've correctly understood this prophetic picture, the image is one of a big hook attached to the wall and all sorts of pots and pans of every size and shape from little to huge are hanging on this hook. And then the hook is cut off and all the pots and pans fall with it.
In like manner, Christ took all our sins upon him and nailed them to the cross. When he was pulled down by death, all our sins were destroyed along with him. Nevertheless, he was raised up again by God. Thus, all can rejoice who say, "The LORD is my portion and my inheritance," remembering that to receive an inheritance the testator must first die (Hebrews 9:16-17).
